For our first night we stayed at Pinecrest. But camping the weekend of July 4th requires some reservations and we had none, so after that, we were off the grid which worked out great.
We drove over the Sonora Pass which is one of our favorite places to go camping. The High Sierras still had plenty of snow for July and the views were amazing.
